Summary

#1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Natasha Preston is back with another pulse-pounding, twisty read!

Haunted by the past 。 。 。

Penny's trying to forget about her ex, Nash。 His father was arrested for the brutal murder of four teenagers on Devil's Night last year。 Penny's parents have forbidden her to have anything to do with Nash or his family。 It's hard not to think of what happened as spooky season gets underway--but she's trying。

That stops when she goes to the Halloween store with her friends to find a costume。 What she finds instead is ripped from a horror movie: a girl from school bleeding out on the floor of a dressing room。 Stabbed。

Is a copycat killer on the loose? The adults are saying no。 But Penny knows better。

It was an easy read, kept my attention…。 But that ending though… not a fan of the cliff hanger ending unless there is gonna be a second book which I do hope there isn’t one of this 😅

"The Cellar" was one of the few books that got me into reading years ago by the same author, Natasha Preston。 Thinking about that book still gives me chills。 So, that's why I was so excited to read "The Haunting," and it didn't disappoint me at all。It's nearing Halloween in Penny's town; the horror of last year's murders was in the minds of the town folks。 This year, the murders start again。 The anxiety Penny felt whenever there was a murder in the town was expressed so well and felt so real。 Th "The Cellar" was one of the few books that got me into reading years ago by the same author, Natasha Preston。 Thinking about that book still gives me chills。 So, that's why I was so excited to read "The Haunting," and it didn't disappoint me at all。It's nearing Halloween in Penny's town; the horror of last year's murders was in the minds of the town folks。 This year, the murders start again。 The anxiety Penny felt whenever there was a murder in the town was expressed so well and felt so real。 The spooky vibes in the story lasted till the very end。I loved the dynamics between Nash and Penny。 They weren't together most of the time, but their connection was so heartfelt。 The twist at the end was so unexpected。 I guessed wrong, not once but many times, about who might be the killer。 The ending is a killer。 I've never encountered a book with an open ending before。 Now, I realize it's something I'll have to endure indefinitely, and it can be quite frustrating。 It's just ended so suddenly。 Actually, it didn't feel like it ended at all; it feels like the story is on pause, but it will never continue。 I still can't process the fact that I don't get a proper ending。Apart from that part, it's just an amazing page-turning thriller with worthy twists and likable characters。 。。。more

I was super excited to read this when I saw it at my local Wal-Mart, perfect in time for Halloween! While I was turning pages dying to know who the killer was, I was left unsatisfied。 Surprised? Yes! Preston did an amazing job delivering a creepy thriller that at times did have my heart pounding for Penny。 Who the killer was did surprise me, I had three guesses and was wrong so that I must give an applaud to! But the ending did have a cliffhanger and that left me very disappointed。 Also the clif I was super excited to read this when I saw it at my local Wal-Mart, perfect in time for Halloween! But the ending did have a cliffhanger and that left me very disappointed。 Also the cliffhanger just felt like there were pages of the book missing and I never had that feeling hit me before。 So, it left me disappointed and unsatisfied with the result。 Also, I do wish I felt more of the chemistry between Nash and Penny。 They used to date until Nash's father was convicted of murder in their small town。 Everyone had shunned Nash, but Penny never wanted to。 She still feels deeply for Nash and decided to start talking to him against everyone's protests。 But they didn't ever get back to the level where they were, they felt more like acquaintances then two people who were in love。 I know that the focus of the story was of course the murders and who the person behind them is。 So, the romance was not a focus which was fine, but I did want a little more there to make that believable。 It seemed like Nash and Penny were nothing more than friends at one point。 I would've also rated this higher, but that cliffhanger was just not done right (for me anyway)。 I felt so unsatisfied even though we found out who the killer was in the end。 This type of story felt like it should've been wrapped up with a different type of ending。 End it on a cliffhanger, but perhaps in a different way。 。。。more

This was a really fun read! I thought it was going to be more super natural based but it's about a serial killer。 Definitely juvenile/young teen。 This was a really fun read! This is just a sad no for me。 I’m very sorry to the author because I’ve been dying to read her work but I will not again。 Maybe if I was prepared it could have been maybe a 3star?It’s a juvenile version of scream + one of us is lying。 -which don’t get me wrong I love those shows/ movies BUT this is titled “The Haunting” I was expecting a…haunting???? Not a slasher/copy-cat killing。 •the summary for this book isn’t even updated to the correct scene for the first body。 Just seems pretty lazy to me This is just a sad no for me。 I’m very sorry to the author because I’ve been dying to read her work but I will not again。 Maybe if I was prepared it could have been maybe a 3star?It’s a juvenile version of scream + one of us is lying。 -which don’t get me wrong I love those shows/ movies BUT this is titled “The Haunting” I was expecting a…haunting???? I want to sue 🤦🏽‍♀️My ick:The boyfriends father was the original killer and it kept referencing the copycat having “Jackson’s mask” at one point the author referred to it as “ his daddy’s mask” and I should have just dnf right then and there。 。。。more

If you’re looking for a fast-paced read for spooky season, look no further。 This was my first Natasha Preston book and it certainly won’t be my last。 The last 20% really hyped me up because I knew that I was getting closer to finding out who the killer was。 My guess ended up being right, but I didn’t guess the killer’s accomplice。 That definitely shocked the heck out of me and made me gasp!! The last few chapters were absolutely insane。 The ending made me say WTF。 Especially since it ends so abr If you’re looking for a fast-paced read for spooky season, look no further。 This was my first Natasha Preston book and it certainly won’t be my last。 The last 20% really hyped me up because I knew that I was getting closer to finding out who the killer was。 My guess ended up being right, but I didn’t guess the killer’s accomplice。 That definitely shocked the heck out of me and made me gasp!! left me hangingI enjoyed this book until the end。 Yes, the mystery was solved and the murderer revealed, but to just end it without any closure was very disappointing。

i was expecting this to be a fun horror/supernatural type book but it was just a regular murder mystery。 the cover and title were very misleading, still not sure how it has to do with the book

Lisa Yother

The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 was the ending was horrible! I am so mad that it didn’t tell more details with the ending。 I was so in the moment and then just BAM!!!!

2。5 really I rounded up。 The story is entertaining but the ending is pretty easy to guess。 It’s a simple read a good Halloween story。 Wouldn’t say it’s my favorite from Natasha Preston。

this one let me downnnn so hard 😭 the haunting follows penny, who is trying to get over her ex, who’s father was responsible for 4 murders on halloween of last year。 when halloween comes around again, the murders continue。natasha preston is notorious for her cliffhangers, and this one kinda pissed me off 😭 the ending was way too rushed, and there’s no epilogue!! AHH!!this book very much reminded me of the scream franchise, which i thought was cool。 literally one of the only redeeming qualities。 this one let me downnnn so hard 😭 the haunting follows penny, who is trying to get over her ex, who’s father was responsible for 4 murders on halloween of last year。 when halloween comes around again, the murders continue。natasha preston is notorious for her cliffhangers, and this one kinda pissed me off 😭 the ending was way too rushed, and there’s no epilogue!! I've read alot of Natasha Preston books especially her thrillers and The Haunting did not disappoint。 She kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time。 Trying to guess who the killer is。 I did figure it out before the big reveal but I don't mind that so much。 The main protagonist, Penny did annoy me a bit keep putting herself in danger but I guess it's not much of a thriller if she didn't。 Otherwise her character was likable and brave。 She knew to stand up for someone who the whole town was rip I've read alot of Natasha Preston books especially her thrillers and The Haunting did not disappoint。 She kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time。 Trying to guess who the killer is。 I did figure it out before the big reveal but I don't mind that so much。 The main protagonist, Penny did annoy me a bit keep putting herself in danger but I guess it's not much of a thriller if she didn't。 Otherwise her character was likable and brave。 She knew to stand up for someone who the whole town was ripping to shreads, was the right thing to do and that's very noble。 I know Natasha Preston is queen of cliffhanger endings and this one is exactly that。 It always leaves me wanting to launch my book across the room but I still always read her books because they are amazing。 I loved everything about this book and I highly recommend it。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review。This was fine。 Preston’s writing isn’t usually for me, but the plot was spooky and Halloween-y enough to make it worth reading。

4⭐️! This is Natasha Preston’s newest novel! Keep in mind this is a YA horror/thriller。 I read this in one day! #NetGalleyARC I hadn’t read anything by this author before this one but so many of my students are fans so I had to give this a try。 This was a perfect October read, creepy and thrilling。 I could see this becoming a movie one day。 Definitely worth the read!

Melissa

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would! Absolutely incredible! And just when you think you have the killer figured out, the author throws someone completely out of left field! And ending…wow! What a cliffhanger! I hope there’s a follow up! Love love love Natasha Preston!
